The optional SMG gearbox was developed from systems used to control the gearboxes in BMW-powered Formula One cars in the late 1990s. The SMG is a manual transmission with a clutch that is automatically engaged. This type of transmission shifts faster than a conventional manual, although it doesn't allow for free selection of gears.
