The 1950’s and 60’s great American automobiles defined an era. The classic styling, excellent performance and lavish colors will forever be an American stable. One of the most popular purveyors of speed and style was the Chevrolet Impala. The most popular and desirable options among collectors today was the addition of an “SS” or “Super Sport” package. This included exterior badging, simulated machine-turned trim inserts, spinner-style wheel covers, interior grab handle and locking center console. To enhance this package one could add matching vinyl front bucket seats finished in the color of your choice. So much for cosmetics – what was really important was underneath the hood. The mighty 409 horsepower Turbo-Fire V8, with a displacement of 409 cubic inches and featuring a twin four-barrel carburetor and high-lift cam, solid lifters and lightweight valve-train. It was a very expensive option but this was a very special engine.
This beautiful example, finished in Roman Red with a matching interior and a black top, has all of the above mentioned goodies, with the desirable Borg-Warner T-10 four speed manual transmission for the maximum level of performance.
Treated to a comprehensive restoration a few years ago, it was then freshened up in 2006-2007 and has been used very sparingly since. The block is with the proper “QB” codes, followed by this cars unit sequence, which tells us the engine was born with the car. Portions of the original build sheet exist that further help identify this great Impala SS.
This is the type of car that one can only dream of adding to there collection of American performance automobiles. From the outstanding color combination to the “SS” trim and related appointments.
